Mormon Doctrine compared with God’s Original Word- The Holy Bible.

By Leigh Fuller.

As with any new discovery, the only way to test its authenticity is to return to a proven base and compare the new material. So it is with new doctrines supposedly given under Divine inspiration. 1 Thessalonians 5:21 says “Prove all things; hold fast to that which is good.”

1 Timothy 4: 1 says that in the last days many will be seduced away from the faith by doctrines of demons. The Bereans were commended by Paul for checking out his preaching. The problem today is that many just believe what they hear coming out of the mouth of preachers. Again we are warned in 2 Timothy 4:3-4.that people will have itching ears and turn away from the truth and to fables.

The Bible is the oldest record of God’s Word to man; it is the only infallible proof with which to compare any other doctrine or any other so called divine revelations. “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness” 2 Timothy 3:16.

The Mormon Church of Latter-day Saints claim to have direct revelations from God through their prophet, Joseph Smith. In fact they claim to have more than one divinely inspired book. They have the Book of Mormon, the Doctrines and Covenants and the Pearl of Great Price. So if these are truly inspired by the Lord God Almighty they should be consistent in their theology and compare doctrinally with each other. For God is not the Author of confusion. 1 Corinthians 14:33

The following are some of their main teachings.

• 1. God the Father has a body of flesh and bone.

• 2. God evolved from man.

• 3. Polytheism. Belief in more than one god.

• 4. Every male Mormon is striving to become a god also.

1. In the Mormon book of Doctrines and Covenants, Section 130:22 it states. “The Father has a body of flesh and bones as tangible as man’s.” The Bible says that God is a Spirit in John 4:24 and Psalm 143:10. And according to Luke 24:39 a spirit has not a body of flesh and bones. Jesus Christ Himself when talking to Simon Peter in Matthew 16:17 says “for flesh and bone has not revealed it unto thee, but My Father in Heaven.”

Even Joseph Smith himself gets confused in the supposedly divinely Book of Mormon and agrees with the Bible. He says God is a Spirit in Alma 18:24-28, 22:9-11, 31:15.

2. Joseph Smith in his own Journal of Discourses Volume 6 page 3 says “God Himself was once as we are now, and He is an exalted man, and sits enthroned in yonder Heavens, That is the great secret. ……. I say, if you were to see Him today, you would see Him like a man in form, like yourselves.”

Almighty God says in the Bible in Hosea 11:9b “for I am God, and not man; the Holy One in the midst of thee:” And again in Job 9:32 “For He is not a man, as I am” says Job.

God is unchangeable: Malachi 3:6 says “I am the Lord and I change not.” The Psalmist wrote in Psalm 90:2 “Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever Thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, Thou art God.”

The Book of Mormon again agrees with the Bible in 3 Nephi 24:6 and Mormon 9:9 says “For do we not read that God is the same yesterday, today, and forever, and in Him there is no variableness neither shadow of changing.”

Which of Joseph Smith’s divinely inspired works do you believe? God is not a god of confusion.

3. On the subject of Polytheism again Joseph Smith differs with the Christian view of the Godhead. The Christian view of the doctrine of the Trinity states that within the nature of one God, there are three Eternal Persons, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost.

Joseph Smith says in the History of the Church Volume 6 page 474 “I wish to declare I have always in all congregations when I have preached on the subject of Deity, it has been the plurality of Gods. I have always declared God to be a distinct personage, Jesus Christ a distinct personage from God the Father, and that the Holy Ghost was a distinct personage and a spirit…. We have three gods anyhow, and they are plural; and who can contradict it.”

Who can??? Well the Bible certainly can. Isaiah 45:5-6 says “I am the Lord, and there is none else, there is no God beside Me….. that they may know from the rising of the sun, and from the west, that there is none beside Me.” See also Isaiah 44:6-9, 45:14, 21, 22, 46:6-9.

Almighty God reaffirms this in Isaiah 43:10-11 “Ye are My witnesses, saith the Lord, and My servants whom I have chosen; that ye may know and believe Me, and understand that I am He; before Me there was no God formed and neither shall there be after Me. I, even I, am the Lord; and besides Me there is no Savior.” Even in the New Testament John records in 1 John 5:7 “ For there three that bear record in Heaven, the Father, The Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.” The Lord God is very emphatic in the above passages. Add to the Mormon confusion again Joseph Smith agrees with the Bible but not with his own statements previously recorded. In the Book of Mormon, 2 Nephi 31:21 says,“ this is the doctrine of Christ, and the only true doctrine of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, which is one God, without end.” See also in the Book of Mormon, Mosiah 15:1-4, 16:15. Alma 11:26-31, 38, 3 Nephi 11:27, 36, 24:6.

4. The male Mormon’s main goal in all his devotion to God is to become one himself. Joseph Smith in Journals of Discourse Volume 6 page 4 says “Here then is Eternal Life, to know the only wise and true God; and you have to learn to be gods yourselves, the same as all the gods have done before you.” Doctrines and Covenants section 132:20 talking about those who are resurrected holy states “then they shall be gods…. Then they shall be above all, because all things are subject to them."

The only statement referring to humans becoming gods is in Genesis 3:4-5

“and the serpent{Devil} said unto the woman, ye shall surely not die; for God doth know that in that day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.”

I do not know about you but before I would trust the Devil who is the father of lies, or Joseph Smith I would place my faith in the God of the Bible who is consistent in all His ways and in all His covenants. In Isaiah 43:10 He says,“before Me there was no god formed, neither shall there be after Me.”

Joseph Smith is consistent as we have seen, he wants it both ways. The Book of Mormon says “yea there is a true and living God. Now Zeezrom said; is there more than one God? And he answered NO.” Alma 11:26- 32.

I hope you are not confused. Mormons certainly have to be if they truly search out the evidence in Joseph Smith’s writings that were according to him inspired by God. My God does not cause confusion, in fact He gives us the Holy Spirit who is the Spirit of truth to guide us to all truth.

Here are some promises in the Word of God concerning it.

• 1. God’s Word shall not pass away. Matthew 24:35.

• 2. God’s Word shall not fail. Luke 16:17.

• 3. God’s Word shall not be broken. John 10: 35.

• 4. God’s Word is founded forever. Psalm 119: 152.

• 5. God’s Word endures forever. 1 Peter 1:23-25.

• 6. God’s Word is inspired by the Holy Spirit. 2 Peter 1:21. 2 Timothy 3:15-17

• 7. God’s Word stands forever. Isaiah 40:8.

• 8. God’s Word is the Truth. John 17:17.

One of the signs of a cult is that they have a so called divine prophet and extra divinely inspired books. They usually have another jesus different to the Jesus of the Bible. Paul warned about this in 2 Corinthians 11:4.

“For if he that cometh preacheth another Jesus, whom we have not preached, or if ye receive another spirit, which ye have not received, or another gospel, which ye have not accepted, ye might well bear with him.”

Mormons believe that Joseph Smith sits in judgment with Christ having done as much for the world’s people as Jesus Christ Himself.

“…no man or woman in this dispensation will ever enter into the celestial kingdom of God without the consent of Joseph Smith…. Every man and woman must have the certificate of Joseph Smith, junior, as a passport to their entrance… I cannot go there without his consent.… He reigns there as supreme a being in his sphere, capacity, and calling, as God does in heaven.” (vol. 7, p. 289)

What blaspheme? Only Christ bore our sins on the cruel Cross of Calvary; only Christ shed His Blood for the remission of our sins; only Christ can be your mediator; only Christ can be our advocate to the Father.

Mormons say also that no other person, including Jesus had a better and fairer character, or be a better example of a true and righteous man than Joseph Smith.

“Well, now, examine the character of the Savior, and examine the character of those who have written the Old and New Testaments; and then compare them with the character of Joseph Smith, the founder of this work… and you will find that his character stands as fair as that of any man’s mentioned in the Bible. We can find no person who presents a better character to the world when the facts are known than Joseph Smith, Jun., the prophet and his brother Hyrum Smith, who was murdered with him.” (Journal of Discourses, vol. 14 p. 203)

Do not be deceived. If you are a Mormon reading this you have been shown the truth from your own literature. You will go to Hell if you do not repent for worshipping another Jesus. Renounce the god of Mormonism, the Devil, and place your trust in the only mediator, Jesus Christ who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life.
